Serving as UHC’s Web Manager, Mary Walton, is heading the task of web site updates and organization.

Mary has a Bachelor’s of Arts in Environmental Science from the University of Virginia and worked as an environmental consultant before going back to school to get a Masters of Landscape Architecture from University of Michigan. She is a strong proponent for sustainable design and responsible stormwater management.

For her master’s practicum, in collaboration with two of her classmates, she worked for a local non-profit from Pittsburgh, PA to prepare an ecological restoration plan for an 80-acre site located 23 miles north of Pittsburgh, PA in the floodplain of Chartiers Creek. The plan addressed the impacts of strip mining and other incompatible land uses through the use of a clump and gap approach where plant groups are strategically placed to spread through natural regeneration. Since the plan’s completion, a new boat launch was constructed, and 300 seedlings, 200 trees, and 200 shrubs have been planted. Work on a wetland boardwalk is ongoing.

Mary also enjoyed working for the University of Michigan’s Matthaei Botanic Gardens, where she helped design and install the Gaffield Children’s Garden, among other display gardens.

Mary is an active member of the American Society of Landscape Architects and currently works as a landscape architect at residential design/build landscape architecture firm.
