Trees, toilets, and inspiration

Activities this evening included viewing two environmentally-themed short films.
Ecopsychology
Documentary, 1995, 26:00 min
Sounds a lot more touchy-feely than it actually is (except maybe the music!).
Author Theodore Roszak talks about framing ecological crises in terms of human psychology, and vice versa. For example, dealing with personal issues such as feelings of loss of worth, or a confusion of how we fit into society, helps approach very broad environmental issues, making such supposedly ‘remote’ occurrences such as glaciers melting and extinction of species into something personal, relevant, and a call to act.
Trees, Toilets, and Transformation: Inspiration from El Salvador
Documentary, 1996, 28:00 min., Variations on a Wave Ltd.
Inspiring and accessible stories of ecological and social
justice issues being addressed by the group CESTA in El Salvador.
The Forest of Reconciliation helps improve air, water, and soil while healing psyches by planting a tree in memory of each of one of the soldiers and civilians who fought on opposing sides in civil war.
Other stories include waste management on a visible, approachable scale, using bicycles to grind corn, and the coolest way you’ve ever seen to make a concrete roof tile in 15 seconds flat!
