Cooking Matters | Elementary School Garden Programs

UHC helped create gardening programs for Cooking Matters at five different underserved youth sites across Chicago in 2011. Work has included consultation, planting bed construction, and gardening instruction. Cooking Matters provides free nutrition and cooking instruction to families in poverty.

In 2012, UHC has continued to provide free after-school and summer gardening, nutrition and environmental education programs at three of these schools- John Hay Elementary in Austin, Walsh Elementary in Pilsen, and Price Elementary in North Kenwood.

Students at Price Elementary School have been busy cultivating fresh grown vegetables to be used for classes with the Cooking Matters program. Arugula and radishes came up nicely followed by lettuce and turnips for a full fall bouquet.
