A parking space may seem small, but multiply it across an entire city and parking becomes an important question about land, water, climate, habitat and community.
ONE SPACE + ONE INCH OF RAIN = ABOUT 95 GALLONS
A typical parking space is roughly 150 square feet.
When one inch of rain falls on that area, approximately 95 gallons of water land on the space.
On asphalt and other impervious surfaces, much of that water cannot soak into the ground. Instead, it moves toward streets, storm drains and sewer systems.
WHY DOES THAT MATTER?
Urban runoff can contribute to:
• overloaded sewer systems
• localized flooding
• erosion
• polluted waterways
As stormwater moves across pavement, it may also collect road salt, oil, grease, sediment, metals, trash and other pollutants.
CHICAGO'S PARKING FOOTPRINT
One independent mapping analysis identified more than 4,000 acres—about seven square miles—of parking area in Chicago.
One inch of rainfall over approximately 4,000 acres represents roughly 110 million gallons of water.
Not all of that rainfall becomes runoff, but the comparison shows how decisions about individual pieces of land add up across a city.
WHAT'S THE ALTERNATIVE?
Land can perform more than one job.
A space designed with soil, plants, trees, rain gardens, bioswales or permeable pavement can help:
• slow stormwater
• encourage infiltration
• filter pollutants
• provide shade
• reduce urban heat
• support pollinators and wildlife
• create attractive public space
LOOK DOWN.
The parking space you're standing in is a tiny piece of Chicago.
Now imagine thousands of similar spaces.
What could happen if some of that land were designed to manage water, support living systems and serve people at the same time?
